BMW launches M Performance – a new sub brand

BMW announced this week that they are launching a new performance sub brand, that will include diesel models. The brand will sit below the full fat M-Cars in terms of outright performance. The aim of M Performance Automobiles (a branch of the M Division) will be to offer customers high performance cars that do not compromise everyday useability in terms of space, practicality and fuel efficiency. Initial models will be a Diesel 5 series and X6 derivative.

To counteract any criticisms, the boss of BMW’s M Division, Dr Friedrich Nitschke, has recorded a video to cover off any concerns M-Car enthusiasts may have.

Buyers Guide: Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG for £15k

A car I’ve been watching in the classifieds is the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG produced between 2005-2008 (followed by revised version). Car and Driver timed one of these at 4.3 seconds to 60mph, and a 1/4 mile in 12.7 seconds! The folding metal roof allows both cocooned Coupe/GT driving as well as summer open topped cruising. Decent low mileage examples can be found for as little as £15,000. This is a lot of high end modern sports car for very little money.

[slideshow id=20]

This car was a beast, the front engined rear wheel drive convertible is compact in proportions. However AMG have managed to fit a 5.4 litre V8 under the bonnet. Coupled with the sublime chassis this car is a real muscle bound sports car.  The aggressive styling hasn’t aged, the car still looks fresh and the F1 inspired design cues still suit it. In fact during the 2004 F1 season the Mercedes SLK 55 AMG was the official safety car for all 18 rounds of the season.

The 55 AMG is normally aspirated and has a 7 speed automatic with manual shift paddles behind the wheel. The 5.4 litre V8 (featuring no less than 16 spark plugs!) has the following vital statistics

  • 5439cc V8, 355bhp at 5750rpm, 375lb ft at 4000rpm
  • Seven-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive
  • 1575kg
  • 4.9s 0-60mph (official figure, Car and Driver claim 4.3s)
  • 23.5mpg combined, 288g/km CO2
  • £49,600 basic price in January 2005

The interior is Mercedes at its finest, soft finish plastics, carbon detailing and generous options including neat features like the air scarf that directs warm air over your neck for when the roof is down in cold weather.

Finding a well kept one is relatively easy, these AMG models seem to have a lot of care and attention. I have seen numerous examples at specialist dealerships with 2/3 owners, full Mercedes service history with invoices and less than 60,000 miles for under £20,000.

When it was launched the car was well received by the motoring press, the car was praised for its supple and controlled ride, despite the huge V8 engine crammed into the front. The build quality and pricing was also complimented. The only concerns were the over zealous electronic stability system, and a slow witted manual shift when really pushing the limits of the cars performance. The stability system is actually very good for everyday driving on UK roads, and you soon learn to work with it to extract the cars ultimate performance for the conditions. Also the gearbox has had several software updates since 2005 to improve its responsiveness. These updates should have been carried out by Mercedes during the regular services. You can check this by reviewing the car’s service invoices.

Blast from the past: Ferrari F40

The poster car of the 80’s is very much alive and kicking! The Ferrari F40 is the definition of supercar. It is still epically quick, even compared to modern super cars (0-60 in 3.8s, 0-100 in 7.6s). Twin turbo charged, carbon fibre construction and lightweight – these are all ideal properties of the latest generation super cars like the McLaren MP4-12C. It is a monster to drive, it has no electronic aids that rein in the current crop of supercars. This makes the F40 even more intoxicating to drive.

DK Engineering have put together a fitting tribute to the Ferrari F40. The F40 is a car that doesn’t have a lot of detailed footage. It’s on my list as the first supercar I want to own. Where’s that euromillions ticket…..

Ford Sierra RS 500 Cosworth

One of the greatest Ford’s of all time is really becoming a highly valued classic. The Ford Sierra RS 500 Cosworth was limited to 500 units and was a homologated evolution of the Sierra Cosworth to help drive the race car to success in the Group A touring car series.

Low mileage examples now sell for up to £50,000. The limited numbers and success of the car on the race track make this a sought after classic sports car.

The 500 cars were made for the UK market and the differences were as follows:

  • Engine with a thicker walled cylinder block
  • Larger Garrett T31/T04 turbocharger
  • Uprated fuel pump
  • Larger air-air intercooler
  • Reworked induction system
  • Second set of 4 fuel injectors and a second fuel rail
  • Uprated oil and and cooling systems
  • Extended (and unused mounts) rear semi-trailing arm beam
  • Rear tail gate had a lower spoiler in addition to the upper whale tail, which had an added lip
  • Discrete RS500 badges on the rear tail gate and front wings
  • Redesigned front bumper and spoiler
  • Removal of the fog lamps and their replacement with intake grilles to boost brake cooling

Classic cars add £4.3bn to UK Economy

Classic sports cars make up a significant part of the UK economy, and yet only contribute to less than 0.25% of UK road traffic. The industry generated £4.3 billion in 2011 and employs 28,000 across the UK. These findings were made by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs in a new report they have put together. link

BMW 1M – Success of 2011

The BMW 1M, limited to 450 cars in the UK sold within a matter of weeks of the official launch. Two thirds had deposits against them before the launch. The car has been critically acclaimed, and its hard not to see why. It references back to the original M philosophy, lightweight, relatively small but high powered engine and motorsport derived dynamics.

Whilst the inclusion of turbos led some to criticise the 1M, most actually love the torque rich and heady low rev range power boost. The turbos aim is to help keep fuel consumption reasonable, but the by product of boost has really given the car a huge amount of character.

Second hand cars are consistently achieving more than list price, further highlighting that this is a car that people want more of. And to answer that, the rumours are growing of a CSL version on the cards, BMW have not ruled it out or confirmed. But there is definately a case for such a low production celebration of the cars success.

In terms of specs, expect the engine spec to remain largely unchanged, with a minor increase from a free flow exhaust and airbox. The big gains will come from reducing weight further, stripping out the interior, rear seats and equipment such as stereo and air con.

Porsche 911 (2012 991) in action @ Rennsport Reunion IV

The 2012 Porsche 911 991 Carrera S was filmed in action around the famous Laguna Seca race circuit during the Rennsport Reunion IV in October 2011. The car looks very similar to the outgoing 997.2 911, despite it being 90% different underneath.

The Rennsport Reunion is now the largest annual gathering of race Porsches and drivers.

300bhp engine in Alfa Romeo 4C

The much anticipated Alfa Romeo 4C (due mid 2012) will feature an aluminium 300hp turbo charged engine. The turbo charged unit features cutting edge fuel management technology, and allows it to meet Euro 6 emission regulations as well as the tough US Tier 2 BIN 5. This means that the 1.8 litre is the most advanced powerplant in the Alfa Romeo range and already complies with the super strict 2014 emission regulations that manufactures of performance vehicles will struggle to meet. The four cylinder unit boasts Multiair variable valve technology, high-pressure direct injection and a high-capacity turbo.

The specification of the upcoming Alfa 4C is still unconfirmed, but if the weight remains at the target 850kg, coupled with the 300bhp engine would give the car a power to weight ratio of over 350bhp/tonne. This would make it a class leading sports coupe in terms of performance and also fuel efficiency. Just to put the 350 power to weight figure into perspective. The current Porsche 911 Turbo S has a power to weight ratio of 330bhp/tonne – from a 530bhp engine with a 1600kg kerbweight. The 0-60mph  acceleration is 3.3 seconds. Expect the Alfa to be in the same region – if not quicker!
