BMW 1M is a sweet handling roadcar

The BMW 1M is receiving praise from the motoring  press. The consensus is that it’s relatively small, dynamic chassis suits the twin turbo engine unit perfectly. The handling is sublime and the ‘real world’ performance is excellent. The low rev torque delivery means performance is much more accessible than it’s bigger brother, the E92 M3. BMW have released a video to demonstrate just how well the car handles.

The new Zagato designed Aston Martin

To mark the 50th anniversary of the DB4 GT Zagato, the Italian design house have collaborated with Aston Martin to design this stunning concept car. Whilst the car looks cutting edge, the process behind its design is very traditional. The design house used techniques that were developed in the early part of the 20th Century. Zagato used a wooden block to carve the streamlined shape and a wheel panel bender intended to shape second world war plane panels. The results speak for themselves but the design has also recieved critical acclaim. The concept has been earned the coveted Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award.

The car is based on a Aston Martin V12 Vantage, and houses the 6 litre V12 engine that produces 510hp.

The concept project also included the production of a second model, a racing version which is expected to compete in the 24-hour Nurburgring race later this month.

Whilst there are no plans for production, it is expected that the positive response to this exercise may lead to a limited run of this stunning model next year.

Team Lotus purchase Caterham

Full details of a tie up between Tony Fernandes’ Formula One racing team and the British Sports Car company hit the press today. The official announcement can be found here.

Caterham have been producing lightweight sports cars based on Colin Chapman’s 1957 2 seater design (known as the Seven) for almost 40 years. The Seven is a car that can either be bought as a kit or factory built. Variants of this platform tailor all levels of performance cars, right up to the Superlight RS500 which has a greater bhp/ton than a Bugatti Veyron and can also comfortably outpace it around a track.

This announcement comes ahead of a court ruling to decide the fate of the Lotus Racing name which is being used by the F1 outfit. The dispute with the company that own Lotus Cars is thought to have influenced the purchase of Caterham.

The price paid by Team Lotus Enterprise is undisclosed but the benefits to both parties are clear. Team Lotus can be rebranded as a variation of Caterham F1, which can end the bitter court battle over the Lotus Racing name. The Caterham brand will become synonymous with F1, the flagship motorsport which is renowned across the globe.

Another revelation that came alongside this is a limited run of Team Lotus themed Caterham’s to celebrate. The optional theme will be available across the Caterham Seven range for £3k, and not only includes the paintwork, but also a numbered plaque signed by the current F1 driver lineup, a Team Lotus book and a tour of the Team Lotus F1 Factory.

A Team Lotus themed Seven is heavily featured in the video they released alongside the announcement.

The Ferrari 250 GTO at Tour Auto 2011

A black ’62 Ferrari GTO took part in Tour Auto 2011. One of only 39 cars ever produced from 1962 to 1964 this is one of the rarest and most sought after cars of all time. The car is worth well over £10 million pounds but is clearly being used as intended, to take part in motorsport events. Enjoy the pics of this amazing car.

Tour Auto 2011 sponsored by Optic 2000

[nggallery id=1]

One of the biggest tours in the european classic car calendar commenced 11 April from Paris. The Tour Auto, which celebrated it’s 20th year, commemorates the first Tour de France Automobile that took place in 1899.

The annual Tour Auto is varied and multifaceted, the trip allows teams to experience race circuits, long distance road stages and timed sprints on specially closed road stages.

The cars ranged from 1950 up to 1980. The earliest car was a beautiful 1950 Jaguar XK120. 300 cars took part ranging from original unrestored classics to full blown historic racing cars.

There were a few tagalongs too, a pair of 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO’s and a 1988 Ferrari F40. Since the rally was partly sponsored by BMW there was also a pre-release BMW 1 Series M.

The route spanned from Paris to  South West France. Along the route were four historic race circuits including Le Man which hosts the annual 24 hour race.

My favourite cars in parc fermé were two 1973 Porsche 911 RS 2.7 and a 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL ex racer.

I have taken over 300 pictures at parc fermé on 11 April. To view my full online album of the magnificent cars getting ready for this rally please just email me at info@revivalsportscars.com and I will provide you the link to my online album. The pictures rotating above are just a sample of the images I took on the day.

BMW go back to their roots with the 1 Series M

BMW are to produce the 1 series M car (“1M”) in May 2011. The car will be a return to the small, lightweight M car philosophy that made the M badge so special.

The world famous badge

In my article why 90’s sports cars are icons I highlight the increase in size and weight of cars over the last 20 years. The evolution of the BMW 3 Series is a clear example of this trend. The original 1987 BMW M3 was based on the E30 platform of the 3 series. The wheelbase was 2568mm and the weight was 1257kg whilst the current 3 series is 2761mm and 1655kg. That’s a 30 percent increase in weight alone. To compensate for this growth BMW have increased power and torque by approximately 80 percent! Whilst the current E92 M3 is now a junior supercar, some of the driver experience has been lost in translation. Electronic aids now include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), anti-slip control (ASC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), an anti-fading function and a dry brake function.

There was no need for a 1 Series in the 80’s or 90’s. BMW has created the market for this model series by gradually making the 3 series larger with each iteration. This sales and marketing strategy has worked brilliantly to increase sales volumes. However it has left the enthusiast with a car that has gradually lost distinction.

So the 1M is essentially a truer modern take on the original and best M3 of them all, the E30 M3. The specifications are of course very different, there is much more power, more weight and also more driver aids in the 1M. However, this is probably the closest BMW will get to making a car worthy of comparison to an E30 M3. Detailed spec is as follows (BMW E30 M3 figures shown in brackets for comparison).

Engine 3.0 litre twin turbo straight six (2.5 litre in-line 4 cylinder)
Power 340bhp (220bhp)
Torque 369lb ft (180 lb ft)
Weight 1570kg (1257kg)
Power to weight 217 bhp/ton (178 bhp/ton)
Power per litre 113 (96)
Acceleration 4.9s (6.7s)
Wheelbase 2660mm (2568mm)

The reason why it is called the 1 Series M and not M1 is because that name is reserved for a totally different model altogether, BMW’s only supercar to date, the 1978 M1.

Price of the 1M start at just under £40k and delivery will commence on 14 May 2011.

Audi Quattro concept will be produced

Audi are to produce the 2010 Quattro concept with expected delivery in early
2013. The car is expected to cost over £100,000 and be produced in limited numbers (less than 5000).

Audi Quattro Concept 2010

Specification is unconfirmed but expect permanent 4WD, a lightweight aluminium chassis, aluminium/composite body and around 400bhp/350ft lb torque from a 2.5 litre turbo charged in-line 5 cylinder engine. Overall weight is expected to be around 1300kg. The coupe body of the concept car weighs a mere 159kg.

The Quattro concept was unveiled at the Paris Motorshow in September 2010 celebrating 30 years since the launch of the first quattro. Road test magazines have since driven the concept, so the announcement of it’s production doesn’t come as a shock. The concept car is based on a RS5 with a 150mm shortened wheelbase and 40mm lower roofline.

The look of the car is extremely clean and in proportion. The design takes cues from the original Sport Quattro from the 80’s. Namely the C pillar design, rear lights, bonnet vents and general shape/stance. Despite the coupe shape there will be no rear seats, a strut brace will be in their place to increase chassis stiffness and improve extreme road holding. It is unclear whether the iconic rear light design and the gaping front grill will make production.

Expect the car to be sold out well before production commences due to the exclusivity.

Comparing the specification of the Audi R8 V10 to the Quattro power to weight will be comparable with headline performance of 0-60 in under 4 seconds and a top speed above 180mph (unlimited).

This concept is the latest in a series of semi nostalgic production cars.
